Austin - The Long Hot Summer

I don't usually watch local news casts. I'm always so agitated by the sensationalism and outrageous ignorance put forth. I get my news from certain unnamed radio programs, newspapers, the Internet and the Daily Show. I try to have an open mind and be non-judgmental. I grew up in an industrial northern city. I have an unremarkable level of education, I'm middleclass but I've been poor and I have left leaning ideologies. I tell you this because of the past 3 days.

Tuesday night, June 19, somehow a local news broadcast ends up on my television.
The lead story - a drunken priest crashes his car into a Smithville diner that had patrons at the time. My husband and I both shake our heads and laugh cynically. Not that we think a car crashing into a diner is funny. It just amuses us that this would be the big story of the night. How provincial.

Wednesday, June 20. I'm taking one of my daily Internet news breaks and in the list of recommended articles I find "Crowd attacks, kills man at Texas Juneteenth festival". The first thought in my apparently not so non-judgmental mind is this probably happened in Dallas or Houston. I click on the link. The AP article proceeds to describe how a Juneteenth festival crowd of 2000-3000 beat a man to death because the car he was riding in struck a little girl. Flashback to Bed-Stuy, East L.A., Bagdad, etc. How do several thousand people beat a man to death?

I look at the by-line - Austin. Austin? WTF? I send the link to a co-worker - did you see this? She hadn't. I go to a local news station website - the lead story is still that drunken priest. I look at the other stories, and there a little further down is the same AP article. I re-read the article. The man killed has a Hispanic name, and the article implies that the Juneteenth festival goers were involved. For those who don't know, Juneteenth is the celebration of the official, albeit late announcement in Texas, of the Emancipation Proclamation, resulting in the freeing of slaves. It is predominately celebrated by the black community. Is this another racially motivated incident? I almost feel sorry for the new police chief.

Thursday, June 21 - Happy Summer Solstice. I open the morning paper and find a front page article about Tuesday's tragedy. There are pictures. I read the article. The story has changed somewhat. Turns out, the Juneteenth crowd was several blocks away. The car that struck the little boy (another error in the story) was turning into an apartment complex that happened to be on the same side of town. When the driver got out of the car to check on the boy, a group descended upon him. When his passenger got out of the car to protect the driver, the group of 2 to 20, turned on him and proceeded to beat him to death. Meanwhile, the driver got back in his car and fled the scene. It appears all the players in this story are Hispanic. What happened to those 2000-3000 black folks that were involved yesterday?

How did a terrible and sad incident involving fewer than 20 or 30 people in a very specific location get twisted into an indictment of several thousand people celebrating freedom in a very large area? Who made that connection in the first place, and more importantly, why?

Ice Storm Hits Austin

Austin has been covered with a layer of ice since Monday. This is a rare occurrence, so my wife and I decided to go outside and enjoy the snow.

My election day prediction

Online punduts are throwing out their election day predictions, so here is mine. If I'm wrong, I'll leave it up for all to see, but I think I will be close.

Republicans keep the House and the Senate. The write-in campaign will work for Shelley Sekula-Gibbs in Texas-22, Tom Delay's seat. Enough Republicans will punch Foley for Negron, and Negron will take Florida-16. Steele will take Maryland over Cardin. Talent will narrowly defeat McCaskill, and Corker will dominate Ford.

The Senate is a lock, but I think we are going to just squeak by in the House. The thing that's going to suck the most is the lawsuits that are sure to follow ... The ads will be gone from the televisions, but the overblown legal drama will take their place.

reBlog MT plugin and MT 3.33

I recently upgraded to MovableType 3.33 to address a recent security bug that involves a hacker being able to reset an author's password in an effort to gain unauthorized access to the system. When I did this, I started receiving the following errors whenever I tried to make a post:

Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at lib/MT/ObjectDriver/DBI.pm line 103. at lib/MT.pm line 867 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Got an error: Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at lib/MT/ObjectDriver/DBI.pm line 103. at lib/MT/App/CMS.pm line 906

More after the jump ...

The Leak

In the past few weeks, it was pointed out that George Bush approved some CIA leaks. The White House is not denying this claim and, if anything, states that the leak was legal. Legal or not, I don't care. If it really was legal, then the White House shouldn't have lied to the American public when the leak issue came up a few years ago and instead should have stood up to the plate and said "yeah, we did it...and it's legal...sorry for any problems this may have caused." Instead, from 2004:

Wednesday, February 11, 2004 Posted: 1:46 AM EST (0646 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush said Tuesday he welcomes a Justice Department investigation into who revealed the classified identity of a CIA operative.

"If there's a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is," Bush told reporters at an impromptu news conference during a fund-raising stop in Chicago, Illinois. "If the person has violated law, that person will be taken care of.

"I welcome the investigation. I am absolutely confident the Justice Department will do a good job.

"I want to know the truth," the president continued. "Leaks of classified information are bad things."

But hey, 2004 was an election year...not a good time to be forthcoming, even if it was 'legal'.

Judge Recuses Himself Over Pledge Of Allegiance

Sister Toldja chimes in with a story about a Judge who recused himself after a lawyer in his court filed a complaint over the fact that Gwinnett County Majistrate Judge Mark A. Lewis opens each session with the Pledge of Allegiance. The lawyer, Donald Weissman had this to say:

Weissman said he’s concerned that failure to recite the pledge could affect fairness in the courtroom.

“The more I thought about it, the more concerned I became about whether people in the courtroom might perceive some degree of partiality based upon whether your loyalty is to the United States or not,” he said.

Funny quote of the day - 04-05-2006

This one comes from a post on Babalu Blog regarding a message that made it's way to their inbox:

No, Bush is not the best thing since plantains. Plantains are the bomb. However, the alternative to Bush is like eating plantains out of a dirty toilet.

For all my fellow gringos, you can find out more about plantains from the Three Guys From Miami on icuban.com.

Today's Buzzword: Mexitude

I found a post on Michelle Malkin's blog today that talks about another hysterical school Principal banning the display of American patriotism. Over at Freedom Folks, they are calling it Mexitude.

Mex-i-tude The de facto control of social and political policy by illegal aliens.

Think dhimmitude, but substitute Colorado for Kandahar, and La Raza for The Religion of Peace.

I think they've hit the nail right on the head. In today's society of multicultralism, even showing patriotism for your own country is now taboo. I thought that was the whole point of America. Everyone coming here to be one people. Not Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, etc ... Americans. How many people have you met who call themselves "English-Americans" or "Euro-Americans"? None. Because most immigrants from western countries assimilate, and consider themselves American. That's the point. The melting pot.

Jay Tea over at Wizbang is calling these non-immigrants colonists. Spot on brother, spot on.

Sharks with frickin laser beams ... or not

I read a story at The Observer linked from Daily Rotten today about dolphins, trained by the US Navy, with poisonous darts attached to their bodies that they can fire "to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater" that have escaped into the wild as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Sounds great ... but I call Bullshit! So do the folks over at Wizbang! Next they'll tell us it's really sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads. Dr. Evil had this to say.

Iraqi Minister Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf finds a new job

There are no levee breaches in New Orleans. I repeat, there are no levee breaches in New Orleans. Ignore what you are seeing on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and any other infidel media outlet. They are telling lies, and we will destroy them. Thank you, that will be all.

Hurricane Rita Pictures

I've taken some photos of the clouds here in Austin/Pflugerville. They look a bit different now than they did this morning, but somewhat interesting nonetheless. You can view the photos in my gallery by clicking the image below.

Rita weakens to Category 3

Hurricane Rita has weakened to a category 3 hurricane. There are now reports of at least three levee breaches in New Orleans, and an official report that there is flooding in the 9th ward of New Orleans. LA Governor Blanco's advice to those who have opted to stay in New Orleans is:

"Perhaps they should write their Social Security numbers on their arms with indelible ink."
Not much has changed in the latest NOAA Rita warning page. The National Weather Service Office in Houston has a contantly updated page available at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/hgx/ and a statement posted at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=HGXHLSHGX. All of the local statements from the National Hurricane Center can be found at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/index_hls3.shtml You can also get a listing of all the New Orleans evacuations on the NOLA blog at http://www.nola.com/weblogs/localbreakingnews/

Rita shifting in it's tracks

According to analysts, Rita is beginning to feel the effects of land and appears to be weakening temporarily, while attempting to rebuild. While South Texas is largely breathing a sigh of relief, those people still in New Orleans are not faring so well with reports of more flooding with water flowing over "repaired" levees. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Rita weakens further before hitting land. We can already see the cloud ring bands here in Austin. I'll try and take some pics later and get em posted up in the gallery.

Houston empties bracing for Rita

Reports are coming in that traffic out of Houston is moving at a rate of about 7 miles per hour. I have heard numerous first-hand accounts that the freeways are completely clogged in all directions. I have family coming to Austin from Houston, and about a dozen co-workers have family coming as well. There are numerous reports that cars are running out of gas or breaking down which impedes the process even further. If you want to know if you are in an evacuation zone, you can check this evacuation zone map from The City of Houston's Hurricane info page. It also looks like The Storm Track is taking a severe beating. You can now reach Storm Track via the Coral Cache at http://thestormtrack.com.nyud.net:8090/ If you're in Texas and need more info, try looking at the Texas DPS Hurricane Rita info page. If that site gets swamped, you can try accessing through the Coral Cache at http://www.txdps.state.tx.us.nyud.net:8090/dem/rita_index.htm
